Alt-Carpo codling moth netting: total physical exclusion with triple protection

Alt-Carpo netting is a mechanical exclusion system that covers rows or entire plots with high-density HDPE monofilament netting (5 × 4 threads/cm). The mesh aperture physically prevents the adult codling moth from entering, breaking its biological cycle without chemical treatments. Made from the same 0.31 mm monofilament as our anti-hail netting, but in the higher-density variant to guarantee total exclusion of Cydia pomonella.

Unlike a conventional net, Alt-Carpo offers triple simultaneous protection: a barrier against insects (codling moth, sawfly, fruit fly), anti-hail protection and bird exclusion. Its 72.4% porosity allows natural air circulation, preventing condensation and creating a microclimate favourable to the crop. Compatible with certified organic production, integrated production and GlobalG.A.P. protocols.

Advantages of Alt-Carpo codling moth netting for fruit trees

Exclusión total

Eficacia cercana al 100% demostrada en ensayos de campo.

Compatible con ecológico

Método de control mecánico sin residuos químicos.

Sin resistencias

La exclusión física no genera resistencias en la plaga.

Allows bee pollination

The mesh aperture lets honeybees and pollinating bumblebees through. It is installed after flowering, or the sides are opened during the pollination period. Compatible with on-farm beekeeping.

No resistance — permanent efficacy

Unlike insecticides and the granulosis virus (CpGV), physical exclusion generates no resistance in the pest. The same efficacy as the first year is maintained throughout the net's service life, with no need to rotate active ingredients.

Fast payback

The investment in Alt-Carpo netting is recovered quickly thanks to savings on plant-protection treatments, the elimination of pest losses and improved export-grade fruit quality. UV stabilised for maximum outdoor durability.

Made to measure — direct from the manufacturer

Made up to the dimensions of your plot and planting system (single-row, wrap-around or full canopy). Standard widths up to 5.25 m, with panels sewn together for larger covers. Deal directly with the source.

Crops protected with Alt-Carpo codling moth netting

Apple

Main crop for the Alt-Carpo system. Codling moth is the most damaging apple pest in Spain (Lleida, Girona, Navarra). 95–100% efficacy in excluding Cydia pomonella in both conventional and organic production.

Peral

El peral sufre ataques de carpocapsa con la misma intensidad que el manzano.

Nogal

Codling moth in walnut (Cydia pomonella) affects nut production, especially in organic growing. Exclusion netting is the most effective solution in walnut, where chemical treatments have very narrow application windows.

Cherry

Combined protection against Rhagoletis cerasi (cherry fruit fly) and Drosophila suzukii. The triple insect + anti-hail + bird protection function is especially valuable for cherry in the Jerte Valley and Aragón.

Plum

Codling moth in plum causes premature fruit drop and internal damage. The exclusion netting also protects against fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) in late varieties.

Quince

El membrillero es susceptible a carpocapsa.

The problem

La carpocapsa devasta manzanas y peras

Codling moth or apple moth (Cydia pomonella) is the most devastating pest of pome fruit and nuts in Europe. The larvae bore into the fruit, devour the flesh and seeds, and cause premature drop. In Spain, it severely affects the fruit-growing areas of Lleida, Zaragoza, Girona, Navarra and La Rioja.

Conventional chemical control requires 8–12 insecticide applications per season, generates growing resistance in the pest and leaves residues that hinder export. In organic production, codling moth is the main plant-protection challenge due to the lack of effective alternatives. The granulosis virus (CpGV) loses efficacy when the pest develops resistance.

Without control, codling moth can damage more than 80% of the harvest. Exclusion netting is the only solution with proven 95–100% efficacy and no residues.

Frequently asked questions about Alt-Carpo codling moth netting

How does exclusion netting work against codling moth (Cydia pomonella)?

Alt-Carpo netting creates a physical barrier with an aperture of ≈1.7 × 2.2 mm that stops the adult codling moth from reaching the crop. By blocking egg-laying (oviposition) on the fruit, the pest's biological cycle is broken without insecticides. Field trials validated by centres such as GRAB and INRA show 95–100% efficacy.

Does Alt-Carpo netting allow pollination by bees?

Yes. The net is installed after flowering (single-row/mono-rang system) or the sides are opened during the pollination period. The mesh aperture lets honeybees and bumblebees through. It is compatible with hives inside the covered plot.

What advantage does Alt-Carpo netting offer over insecticides against codling moth?

Exclusion netting eliminates the 8–12 annual insecticide applications, generates no resistance in the pest (a growing problem with CpGV and neonicotinoids), leaves no residue on the fruit and is compatible with certified organic production. The investment pays back quickly through savings on plant-protection products and reduced losses.

Does codling moth netting also protect against hail and birds?

Yes. Textil Villa de Pego's Alt-Carpo netting offers triple simultaneous protection: insect exclusion (codling moth, sawfly, fruit fly), anti-hail protection and a barrier against birds. Three functions in a single product, made from the same HDPE monofilament as our anti-hail netting in a high-density variant (5 × 4 threads/cm).

How is Alt-Carpo netting installed on fruit trees?

There are two main systems: single-row (covering each row individually with the sides anchored to the ground) and full-plot enclosure. The choice depends on the planting layout, the terrain and the crop. Textil Villa de Pego manufactures the netting to the measurements of your plot and advises you on the most suitable system.

How long does codling moth netting last and what maintenance does it need?

Alt-Carpo netting is UV-stabilised for maximum outdoor durability. Its service life depends on the accumulated UV radiation in your area. It requires an annual inspection for tears, spot repairs with patches and protected storage out of season. Its 564 N/5cm tensile strength ensures structural integrity against wind and hail. Contact our team for a personalised estimate.

Does exclusion netting affect the crop's microclimate and ventilation?

Its 72.4% porosity allows air to circulate naturally through the net, preventing moisture build-up and reducing the risk of fungal diseases such as apple scab (Venturia inaequalis). Light transmission is high, with no significant effect on fruit development, colouring or ripening.

How much does Alt-Carpo netting cost per hectare?

The cost depends on the dimensions, the installation system and the making-up required. As a manufacturer, Textil Villa de Pego supplies direct from the factory. The investment pays for itself compared with the alternatives. Request a tailored quote stating your crop, area and planting layout.
